Rihanna steekt maar wat graag de handen uit de mouwen om geld op te halen voor onderwijs in ontwikkelingslanden. De zangeres is ambassadrice van de organisatie Global Partnership for Education. Het Global Citizen Festival in New York wordt georganiseerd voor mensen die zich inzetten voor de acties van Global Citizen. Deze organisatie zet zich in om extreme armoede in de wereld aan te pakken. De Barbadiaanse stuurde daarom een tweet de wereld in aan minister-president Mark Rutte en minister Sigrid Kaag van Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingssamenwerking met de vraag om 100 miljoen dollar te doneren.

Backlash
Hoewel premier Rutte en minister Kaag vooralsnog niet gereageerd hebben, krijgt Rihanna wel enorme backlash op haar verzoek. “Tja, Maarten van der Weijden zwemt 163km in 55 uur en haalt 2,5M op. Ondertussen vraagt Rihanna casually voor 100M”, “Ze is zo lekker bescheiden hé?” en “What about money for Dutch education and teachers first?”, klinkt het op Twitter.
