Frownies (1889)We schrijven 1889. Ene Margaret Kroesen ontdekt dat dochter Alice, een concertpianist, kampt met beginnende fronsrimpels. Omdat deze lijntjes schadelijk zouden zijn voor haar pianistencarrière voelt moeder Kroesen zich geroepen een oplossing te bedenken. Ze vindt ’m in haar Frownies: papierstrips met een plantaardige lijm die je voor het slapengaan op je voorhoofd plakt. De volgende ochtend zijn de fronslijnen verdwenen. De strips hebben kennelijk een goede dienst bewezen, want ze zijn nog steeds op de markt.frownies.com

Star Vibrator (1920)Dit massageapparaat zou de spieren stevig en gezond moeten houden. In een advertentie uit 1921 staat geschreven: ‘The secret is this – s s h h ! – facial muscles must be kept firm and healthy. Or they will get soft, flabby. So home electric massage is of vital importance. It is as necessary as the brushing of your teeth.’ Dat u het weet.

Dimple Machine (1936)Isabella Gilbert bedacht in 1936 een metalen beugel die kuiltjes in de wangen zou moeten veroorzaken. Au. In een advertentie uit die tijd staat: ‘DIMPLES are now made to order! These aids to beauty can be produced as the result of a new invention by Isabella Gilbert of Rochester, N. Y. The device consists of a face-fitting spring carrying two tiny knobs which press into the cheeks.’ Wie wil?
